The Weeaboo

"The world is finally starting to ‘wake up’ to what Japan has to offer."

Japan sure does love their lasers. Oh yeah, and women. Them, too.
Truer words about the relation of the Western world with Japan have never been spoken. After many centuries of isolationism, preferring the Japanese culture so delicately cultivated by shoguns and emperors, samurai and daimyo, relations and eventually trade with the country opened up to the rest of humanity with the mission of the United States to Japan. Since then, it has been an ongoing exchange of culture that has inundated the market with goods from both countries.

As Japan gained a lot of political and economic structure from the United States, especially following World War II and defeat by the U.S.-involved Allies, the U.S. has also gained quite a bit in the way of culture. From anime to manga, Pocky to sushi, many of the wealthy American staples come directly from Japan. So why is there still a stigma to being in love with Japanese culture?

A little bit of this and not so much of that

The blogs I write about almost always have a specific niche, whether it be technology, videogames, or even saving money in daily life. Not often enough to do I write about those simple blogs whose only goal is to entertain the reader with stories and images, a concept from the webdays of old.

This is because not often enough are there even good blogs to write about with this sort of premise. They're usually either so wild and unruly, or entirely uninteresting, that I can't see any reason to post them on my blog for featuring.

watocw

An interesting little blog I happened to find on the Bloggeries site is watocw, a blog self-described as such:

"We are an organization called WATOCW, and we are two guys who like technology and mischief (mostly the technology part, but we know how to blow off some steam from time to time). Our goal in making this site is to hopefully spread some information that you all will enjoy, and to basically create a central hub for all people to use. This site is for your avid computer users, programmers, and anyone interested in the field of technology."

Did someone say technology? :D

The topics covered on watocw aren't your average tech posts, usually. Sure, there's a bit of the iPhone here, and some LulzSec there, but overall there are some really interesting posts on such topics as BitCoin theft and the amount of information currently on and projected to be on the internet. It's actually quite interesting if you take the time to fully understand the implications.

The blog is very well set-up, in addition to content. The name of the blog is a bacronym for "We are the organization called WATOCW," thought up by the co-authors Clocwork and Shadowdrifter.

TechEBlog

If my readers haven't figured it out already (how could you not!), I'm a huge fan of tech and related subjects. There is something about the innovation involved with, and the insanely fun results of, technology. From diamond-studded watches to Australian hoverbikes, one can never get enough -- well, for the most part. I will admit some of these (read: most of these) are pretty ridiculous, but still quite enjoyable to read about.

Today's feature, TechEBlog, is a tech news blog, bringing you the most interesting in recent gadgets and gizmos. The blog doesn't just announce the news, though; there's also somewhat-frequented forums to discuss the latest, as well as a shopping deals section. Want to blow $100 on an incredible Darth Vader lightsaber that has the cool sounds and power-up/power-down lights? Here ya go.

One thing the blog could really use: a clean-up crew. The big drawback for this blog (at least, for me) is the clutter. I would expect that the posts get no comments because of the fact that it takes about a minute to scroll down to the comments section itself from the post. With a little work, the site could really launch.

Techinit

One of the most popular subjects in our day and age is technology, and the writer at Techinit knows that well.

Techinit, a blog on (you guessed it!) technology, is written by Willy Wade, a self-proclaimed nerd and guru with tech. If you visited his blog, you'd proclaim it, too! Sometimes, the tech talk is actually almost a bit confusing, but then again, I may just not know enough myself.

Here's an example of what you can expect:

"HTC Sensation (Engadget, Gizmodo)

  • Despite being a pretty evangelical HTC user, I've never really liked HTC's Sense UI. But with it's 3rd incarnation upon us, it looks set to finally take my heart. If that doesn't go to plan, I bet this girl would FLY with a stock ROM on her."
While the content is wonderful, this particular blog could use some improvements. The most noticeable would be to the design of the site. The light green doesn't really flatter the blog as well as it should, and it's a pretty plain layout. Another problem is that there's an obscene lack of pictures, especially on a blog where people are dying to see what it being talked about.

However, Techinit's content redeems the blog and keeps me coming back. For the latest on tech, whether it be phones or game systems, check out Techinit.
